28. Embodied Mental Imagery in Cognitive Robots

چکیده
This chapter is focused on discussing the concept of mental imagery as a fundamental cognitive capability to enhance the performance of cognitive robots. Indeed, the emphasis will be on the embodied imagery mechanisms applied to build artificial cognitive models of motor imagery and mental simulation to control complex behaviors of humanoid platforms, which represent the artificial body. With the aim of providing a panorama of the research activity on the topic, first we give an introduction on the neuroscientific and psychological background of mental imagery in order to help the reader to contextualize the multidisciplinary environment in which we operate. Then, we review the work done in the field of artificial cognitive systems and robotics to mimic the process behind the human ability of creating mental images of events and experiences, and to use this process as a cognitive mechanism to improve the behavior of complex robots. Finally, we report the detail of three recent empirical studies in which mental imagery approaches were modelled trough artificial neural networks (ANNs) to enable a cognitive robot with some human-like capabilities. 28.1 Mental Imagery Research Background 620

Visible embodiment: gestures as simulated action.
Spontaneous gestures that accompany speech are related to both verbal and spatial processes. We argue that gestures emerge from perceptual and motor simulations that underlie embodied language and mental imagery. We first review current thinking about embodied cognition, embodied language, and embodied mental imagery. We then provide evidence that gestures stem from spatial representations and ...
متن کاملAn Embodied Cognition Approach to Mindreading Skills for Socially Intelligent Robots
Future applications for personal robots motivate research into developing robots that are intelligent in their interactions with people. Toward this goal, in this paper we present an integrated socio-cognitive architecture to endow an anthropomorphic robot with the ability to infer mental states such as beliefs, intents, and desires from the observable behavior of its human partner. The design ...
متن کاملEmbodied AI: Symbol Grounding through Imagination
This paper presents the principle of symbol grounding in robots. If a robot does not understand words, the robot cannot autonomously talk in the physical world. Understanding language symbols is a necessary condition for autonomous conversations. First, how humans understand language symbols is briefly studied. Humans’ symbol manipulation is based on imagination. Recent brain science shows that...
متن کاملNeural Dissociations between Action Verb Understanding and Motor Imagery
According to embodied theories of language, people understand a verb like throw, at least in part, by mentally simulating throwing. This implicit simulation is often assumed to be similar or identical to motor imagery. Here we used fMRI to test whether implicit simulations of actions during language understanding involve the same cortical motor regions as explicit motor imagery. Healthy partici...
متن کاملAnchoring in a grounded layered architecture with integrated reasoning
The GLAIR grounded layered architecture with integrated reasoning for cognitive robots and intelligent autonomous agents has been used in a series of projects in which Cassie, the SNePS cognitive agent, has been incorporated into hardwareor software-simulated cognitive robots. In this paper, we present an informal, but coherent, overview of the GLAIR approach to anchoring the abstract symbolic ...
